Edda is retrieving!!!!

30/9/2016

Yes I know that I´m stubborn, and that after 3 months of work one can not call this a success - but it doesn´t matter. I´m so pleased that finally she does it- actually fetch a thing that I have decided is the object to be fetched and gives it to my hand. I work with positive reinforcement and only praise and treats when I start with the retrieving training of a puppy. I started that of when trying to get a Shih tzu to retrieve after failing on a spontainious carrier of the american cocker breed. And from that it has never failed me, until Edda came along. She gladly carries, anything, but not to me and not what i tell her to carry. So I guess by this day she has eaten about 3 kilos of meat balls and a bunch of other treats and we have been stuck in:
- I go to the thing, I might chew on it, perhaps lift it up and that is it! Soooooo frustrating. And about three weeks ago she ended up in a fight with Iza about, well just anything, and all of a sudden she started to carry and dropping it by my feet. Then yesterday after getting me so damn angry with her about pulling the leash, she all of a sudden gives me the retrieve. She likes when I´m angry? Or more likely, she needed to be put in place, reminded who is in command and is way to young to have any room to make choices of her own.

Edda is in other words, the total opposite of Iza, who works better the more responsibility and trust you put in her. Like yesterday, we were working with the quails, and a flying quail mean that you shall lie down with your head between your paws. She knows this, but I thought she was a bit "sloppy" so I sneaked up around a corner of the house, called for her to come to me and let a quail fly around the corner - guess what, she lay flat down even in the air, and landed with a thump. I just love that girl!!!

It's tough being Edda today

not only did the quail decide to use her as a landing strip, she has also discovered that birds are her things!

We work hard in the kitchen

24/9/2016

We work hard on not working and thinking when there's a hen in the kitchen... It's quite a challenge to be able to relax, to focuse on other things when there is a bird just in front of a gundog. But to be able to make a retrieve in the midst of birds, to take instructions amongst a bunch of birds, well then this is a must. Iza has made her own solution, which is a way to handle this. She walks away to drink water or go to the pad instead of lay on the floor in front of the bird. Not totally relaxed, but relaxed enough to be able to find solutions. Edda isn't that hyper interested, birds are interesting but not hypnotic to her. Becca, well she has a long way to go until she can be relaxed and take instructions with a bird in the room. She can make a retrieve, but it has do be at least 50 cm away from the bird. Iza can do one 2 inches from the bird. There is a thin balance, we want them to point, but to focuse on commands as well. But if you can't take a command indoors in a calm environment, then taking one while searching in full speed with more then one bird in the neighbourhood will be more than difficult, especially if the human is far behind...

Directions

24/9/2016

The project of the day - retrieves on line. We have been practising this indoors with obvious dummies, (it's hard to hide them on the floor). But indoors and nature are two different things. But I got a really positive surprise - both Iza and Becca was really easy to direct! Three blind retrieves in different directions. ☺️☺️☺️

Dagens projekt - linjetag.

Becca and Martin on Tåkern

While Becca and Martin is duck hunting the rest IF us try to cure sickness, our floating basement and do some "flying quail = sit" training 🤓

Silent night..

23/9/2016

Men låg gjorde hon..
The reak thing är hennes grej!
So we have trained long retrieves, Becca was a star this morning and I was so happy with her. Iza is still a bit confused about why they are so very far away now.

At lunch we did practice number two and we have trained with quail flying while the dog is loose running free. After Becca's workout, I was hot, sweaty and hoarse... But was she did stop and lay down.. I had no whistle with me out to Iza but it worked out great anyway. The 'real thing' is her thing!
Edda did her first training this way and certainly she followed the bird a bit twice, but then she was really, really good ❤️❤️ This applies of course to get her suitably low, so that she does not take a bird, but she still want to take it if necessary, and do not lose interest. Though my worries was unnecessary as she happily licked the bird clean after training so it did feel pampered and loved by its four-legged friends 🤓😜

A walk on the beach

21/9/2016

We went to Halmstad yesterday, yes we all miss it and would love to move back, but moving back is never the same. Moving back is moving to something else and a lot of the things you are missing will not be there... But the sea will be there, the energy and the closeness to everything. But three dogs and birds do not fit in the middle of the town and the friends and easy mess that comes with a tiny town and children will not be there... So no we are not changing back, because new is forward and forward is experience, and experience is knowledge, and knowledge is life!!!

BIS-4

19/9/2016

Our little girls spent a sunny in Skillingaryd today. First out in the showring was Edda Eastriding Gold Edition, she ended up second in her class of three with a price of honour. The judge explained that she started if great but became too happy during the show. Well that is totally okay with us, as long as she enjoys this, so do we. The puppy beating her ended up BIS-2 so she really was just beaten by two puppies then 😉
Iza entered the ring just about the same time and got a price of honour, BOB and a great critique. Then we snoozed for quite some time until the finals. Leontine took Becca to the junior handling and got placed fifth ❤️
Finally over two hours later estimated Iza got to enter with 20 other breeds and was placed BIS-4!!!! She was quite bored after all this time of doing nothing, so we packed up and Martin went duck hunting with Becca and the rest of us went home to study, well long whistle signals and stand as a distance command is just as tough as any studies 🤓

A short resume of the last two days

17/9/2016

two tough days with first retrieve and relaxation next to quail. Then fieldwork where Edda just bloomed! And finally field training exercise at Knektagården arranged by the Bracco and Spinone Club. So now we're well worth having a lazy day in the show ring rounding up this week end 😅
