It’s now confirmed that Iza has two diagnosis in her loin, a juvenile forarminal stenosis and a tethered cord syndrome. The latter one is extremely rare and the first one usually appear in older dogs, but this is a juvenile one.
That they could not be seen until this winter has to do with that she had to be fully grown for it to become a problem. If it had been just one of the diagnosis a surgery could have been possible, but a too small channel combined with an attached nerve in the same area out rule that possibility...
She is still here with us eating three different painkillers and not allowed to do anything but cuddle and stay in the house and garden. Only Iza’s behaviour will be our guidance for how long she will be around. #epagneulbreton #brittanyspaniel #aonceinalifetimelove #thesweetestlove #tetheredcordsyndrome
Please feel free to ask questions! This is not an inheritable illness, most likely it’s due to a virus infection during the pregnancy and could not have been foreseen or diagnosed earlier. The tethered cord syndrome is extremely rare, we are talking about just a handful diagnosed dogs in the world from what we have understood. We found this information about the illness online from what the scientists and doctors had found this far. ”Since tethered cord syndrome is a physiological disorder and develops only when it is abnormally stretched, it cannot be connected to genetic factors, unless the congenital susceptibility of spinal cord to oxidative metabolic impairment is proven” and since both Iza, her siblings and parents are extremely healthy in every other way and don’t suffer from either chronic fatigue or lack of energy, it can not be anything inherent.
The diagnosis is so rare that there is no Swedish name. It also occurs in humans but is classified as extremly rare disease. The name is a collective diagnosis of congenital malformations on the back of the vertebra where the spinal cord's nerve threads end up in a wrong position. In this case, it is located in one of the joint in the lumbar on the right side, where a nerve thread has attached itself to the skeleton instead of hanging freely.
In a calm and quiet dog, you will probably not be able to notice this until it has progressed over years. I noticed the tendency as she landed (after jumping a fence) and placed her right hind leg twice at times or when rising from laying down in obedience to standing, she placed her right hind leg a bit further to the right.
From then on, it has slowly, slowly progressed even though she’s rested and been in inflammatory and painkillers since February. It has still become worse...

Well all of us write here, both humans and dogs ;) At least that was the plan but it seems it´s mostly me Robyn who´s attached to the keyboard...
